More about CDF

The term "Defense Force" is a legal term for a statewide unit of citizens prepared to assist their neighbors, law enforcement officials, and local governments in responding to emergencies and social unrest.

CDF believes that all people have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We exist to ensure those rights are maintained - for all people, irrespective of race or creed.

Our commitment is to principles of justice and liberty as enshrined in the United States Constitution. We don't have to agree with what any particular citizen is saying, but we respect and preserve their right to say it.

We are apolitical and do not espouse political opinions outside adherence to the Constitutions of the United States and Colorado.

We do not endorse any political party or affiliation. We serve to protect the democratic process (the right of a majority opinion to rule while safeguarding and preserving the right of the minority opinion to be heard) and that republican form of governance by which the people are best enabled to govern themselves.

Why CDF?

Instability is rising in natural, political, and social systems. The divide between parties, the rich and the poor, the government and the governed has never been larger.

Water resources are rapidly depleting. Weather systems are changing. Mass migrations of people - American citizens and foreign nationals - are increasing in scale and frequency.

State funding to address appropriate responses is limited. Federal funding is misdirected. CDF provides a solution - a united group of citizens prepared to protect and defend our communities and assist state agencies in responding to emergencies without draining state coffers.

Is CDF a "Militia"?

Technically, legally speaking, CDF is an "unorganized militia", a state "Defense Force". However, it is important to bear in mind that a "militia" is not a paramilitary group. We use the legal term synonymous with the 1688 Bill of Rights in England, and the Federalist Papers, as enshrined in the Second Amendment. That is, a militia is a "civic duty" owed by all free, able-bodied people, to protect and defend the laws of this great country and of the great state of Colorado.

Do I need to Own Firearms to be a Member?

While CDF encourages responsible use and ownership of legal firearms through state sponsored programs (such as concealed carry) ownership of firearms is not a prerequisite for membership. CDF is  comprised of citizens who want to assist each other in the event of an emergency, help first responders and law enforcement officials, while protecting the people and resources of Colorado from overreach or misappropriation by overzealous or unscrupulous interests.

Membership Levels

CDF has a number of memberships. The first level is Adjunct. This is essentially an entry level support membership. An Adjunct may thereafter apply for other memberships within CDF, however there may be certain tests required to ensure suitability to serve in an increased capacity.
